Two Honors Seniors represent Ashland University at the Mid-East Honors Association Virtual Conference

Seniors Nathan Sims and Shelby Stoltz presented scholarly papers at this year's Mid East Honors Association Virtual Conference titled: Utopia!

Sims, a Religion, Philosophy, and Political Science major shared two papers: The Kingdom of God in Actuality and The Necessity of the Holy Spirit: The Defense of Augustine's De Trinitatae. Stoltz presented her Honors Capstone project: Social-Emotional Learning in Secondary Education: Teaching Ohio's New Social-Emotional Learning Standards in High School Langauge Arts Curriculum. Both students enjoyed sharing their work and fielding the questions from attendees. In addition to presenting their scholarly papers they networked with other Honors students from 23 institutions across the Mid East region which includes, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Michigan. Stoltz commented, "I really enjoyed this experience; I think Honors students in the future would benefit from this experience in its many facets, both academic and social."

PAPER ABSTRACTS

The Kingdom of God in Actuality

This paper deals the with difficult subject of the Kingdom of God in Christian theology. It attempts to understand whether or not the Kingdom of God is just an eternal concept or if it has temporal aspects attached to it. I argue that that there is a temporal aspect to the Kingdom of God when it comes to building what Hovey calls the Polis. I use Myers and Hovey to make the argument that there is a temporal moral understanding of the Kingdom of God which should be accepted by the Christian as a state of being and used to strive towards bring the Kingdom of God to immanence

The Necessity of the Holy Spirit: The Defense of Augustine's De Trinitatae

This paper attempts to go through Augustine's De Trinitatae and understand the theology of the Holy Spirit in order to understand whether or not Augustine places the Holy Spirit below the Father or the Son in the position of the Trinity. The ultimate conclusion is that Augustine does not put the Holy Spirit in a lower position within the Trinity. In fact, I make the argument that Augustine sets the Holy Spirit up as a necessity to take part in the triune life and without it there is no way to understand the Trinity.

Social-Emotional Learning in Secondary Education: Teaching Ohio's New Social-Emotional Learning Standards in High School Langauge Arts Curriculum

Many contemporary researchers and educators agree on the need to implement social-emotional learning (SEL) in modern public education to teach necessary life skills not usually covered in academic instruction. Typically SEL instruction has focused on primary-level students, but research shows that middle and high school students also benefit from SEL instruction in a very meaningful way during the critical period of development these students experience during adolescence. The field of English Language Arts in itself is a venue for simple SEL instruction. Many English Language Arts teachers are already implementing SEL into their curriculum, whether intentionally or unintentionally. The very nature of the field of literature and the study of it embodies SEL as readers vicariously observe and empathize with the experiences of fictional characters. This creates a unique pathway to SEL instruction through the use of literature that allows for simple intercurricular implementation, requiring few changes to the existing curriculum. This work included a curriculum guide demonstrating this implementation based on the Ohio Department of Education’s new K-12 SEL Standards.
