Honors Program students present at URCA 2019

The 10th annual Ashland University College of Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Symposium (URCA) took place on April 9, 2019. This event allows students to present their scholarly and/or creative work in a professional conference format. These outstanding students begin their careers already contributing in their particular fields.



This year, a number of Honors Program students presented at the URCA symposium. Some of our students gave oral presentations, including:
  • Senior Alexis Lough: Effects of Microplastic Exposure on the Freshwater Crustacean, Daphnia magna
  • Senior Brianna Sargent: Quand La Culture Reste: Le Rhum et Martinique
  • Senior Kiana Ziegler presented an oral and poster presentation, entitled A Meditation on the Flesh: Self-Therapy for Managing Chronic Health Conditions
  • Senior Emily Nicholls: The Differeing Quality of Two Wetland Plant Communities and the Possible Impact on Threatened Marsh Birds
  • Senior Corianna Borton: Probing the Root Exudation of Harmala Alkaloids from Syrian Rue
  • Sophomore Shelby Aulger: Defining What is Natural: Gender Issues of Dominance and Control Within Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God
  • Senior Kaitlyn Bailey: Answering the Battle Cry of Freedom: Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and the Call to Noble Action
  • Junior Abigail Dingus: Density-Dependent Growth Responses of Arabidopsis to Copper Toxicity
  • Senior Audrey Saler: The Impact of Brand Perceptinos on Consumer Behavior
  • Senior Naomi Sims: The Relationship of Artificial Intelligence and Humanity: Andy, the Analysis of a Screenplay
  • Junior Elizabeth Grim: Feminismo en como agua para chocolate
  • Senior Allyson Lombardo: Examination of Using LIght as a Baiting Technique for Adult and Larval Ambystomid Salamanders
  • Senior Emily Martin: An Analysis of the Effect of Early Season Winning Percentage on Final Regular Season Winning Percentage

Honors Program students also gave poster presentations on a variety of topics, including:
  • Junior Dana Awlia: Media's Influence on Islamaphobia
  • Freshman Taylor Bunce: Investigation of Metal-Organic Frameworks Incorporating Carboxycoumarin Linkers
  • Junior Maria Kern: Water Quality Monitoring in the Black Fork River, a Tributary in the Ohio River Basin
  • Senior Elizabeth Takacs (along with fellow student Bryce McClish): Price Estimations and Confidence Levels: An Experiment Replicated
  • Senior Kaitlyn Moore: An Examincatino of News Coverage and Media Framing of Gay Marriage/Marriage Equality
  • Senior Kiana Ziegler (along with several other art students): Brand Identity and Product Packaging Design
  • Junior Cameron Middis: Design and Construction of an E-cigarette Inhalation Chamber
  • Junior Cillian Donahue: Using Passive Sampling as a Method for Pesticide Analysis
